Etymology

Judec is the first-person present form of a judeca, inherited from Latin iudicare. That Latin verb was built from ius, meaning law or right, and dicare, a form related to dicere, meaning to say or pronounce. The compound originally meant to pronounce the law. Romanian kept the verb in everyday use, alongside close relatives in every other Romance language and in English judge, which arrived through Old French.
