Etymology
The word goes back to Latin sancta, the feminine of sanctus, meaning holy or consecrated. It is a doublet of the standard Romanian sfântă, which picked up an extra "f" sound through a well-known but irregular sound change. The sânt-/sântă- form survived mainly in fixed calendar and place names, such as Sântă Mărie for the feast of St. Mary, rather than as an everyday adjective.
