Etymology
Sfânt descends from Latin sanctus, the past participle of sancire, meaning to consecrate or make inviolable. Romanian kept the word as its ordinary term for holy, unlike most Romance languages, which shifted the old adjective toward the narrower sense of saint. The nasal vowel shift from sanctus to sfânt is a regular sound change found across many inherited Latin words in Romanian.
