Etymology

Romanian borrowed "rezista" from French "résister" in the nineteenth century, during the period when Romanian intellectuals reshaped the language with Western Romance vocabulary. French "résister" itself descends from Latin "resistere," built from the prefix "re-" (back, against) and "sistere" (to stand, to take a stand). The Latin root ties back to the same base found in "consist," "exist," and "insist."
