Etymology
Romanian borrowed "rezistență" from French "résistance" in the nineteenth century, during a wave of Latinate and French borrowing that modernized the language. French "résistance" descends from Latin "resistentia", the noun built from the verb "resistere", to stand against. That verb combines "re-" (back, against) with "sistere" (to stand, to place), a reduplicated relative of "stare" (to stand).
