Etymology

Cur comes from Latin culus, meaning buttocks. Romanian underwent a sound change called rhotacism, in which an intervocalic Latin -l- regularly turned into -r-. The same shift produced gură from Latin gula and soare from Latin sol. Other Romance languages did not undergo this change, so their descendants of culus kept the l.
