Etymology

Impresionat is the past participle of the verb a impresiona, meaning to impress or move someone emotionally. Romanian borrowed the verb from French impressionner in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loans that reshaped the modern Romanian vocabulary. The French verb itself traces back to Latin impressus, the past participle of imprimere, to press into. The Latin root premere, to press, underlies the whole family.
