Etymology
Romanian borrowed "impresionant" from French "impressionnant" in the nineteenth century, during the period when Romanian intellectuals reshaped the language's vocabulary along Romance lines. The French word is the present participle of "impressionner," built on "impression," which goes back to Latin "impressio," a noun formed from "imprimere" ("to press into," from "in-" plus "premere," "to press"). Latin "premere" is traced by most etymologists to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning "to press" or "to strike," the same root behind English "press" and "print."
