"Me" is a shortened, mainly poetic and regional variant of "mea", the feminine singular form of the Romanian possessive adjective "meu/mea" ("my"). It survives chiefly in traditional folk songs (doine) and older or dialectal speech, where the final unstressed "-a" is dropped for rhythm or local habit. Romanian "mea" continues Latin "mea", the feminine of "meus" ("my, mine"), which in turn goes back to the Proto-Indo-European first-person possessive stem also behind English "my" and "me".
