Larg descends from Latin largus, meaning abundant, generous, or ample. Over time the Romanian form narrowed to the spatial sense of wide or broad. Other Romance languages inherited the same Latin root but split off in different directions: Spanish largo came to mean long rather than wide. The deeper origin of Latin largus itself is not firmly established.
