Etymology
Romanian pistă was borrowed from French piste during the modernization of Romanian vocabulary in the 19th and 20th centuries. French piste came from Italian pista, which traces to Latin pistare, a verb built on pinsere, meaning to pound or crush. The underlying image is a path beaten down by repeated footsteps or wheels, which later widened to cover runways, ski slopes, and even the trail an investigator follows.
