Etymology
Romanian borrowed "campion" from French "champion" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French vocabulary that reshaped Romanian after the Latin alphabet replaced Cyrillic. French "champion" itself descends from Late Latin "campio, campionis", a fighter who represented someone in single combat, from "campus", meaning open field or battleground. The word kept its dueling sense in medieval Europe before shifting to mean a contest winner.
