Etymology
Romanian borrowed "a trata" in the nineteenth century, when the language absorbed large numbers of French and Italian words to replace or supplement older Slavic and Ottoman vocabulary. The immediate sources are French "traiter" and Italian "trattare," both descendants of Latin "tractare," a frequentative form meaning to handle or manage repeatedly. From that core sense of handling something, Romanian developed the three main meanings still in use: treating an illness, negotiating an agreement, and treating a topic or a person in a certain way.
