Etymology
Uit is the first-person singular present of a uita, which descends from Latin oblitare, a frequentative form built on oblitus, the past participle of oblivisci, meaning to forget. Romanian kept this verb for its core sense of forgetting, but over time speakers also began using its reflexive form, a se uita, to mean to look or to watch. That second sense has no clear parallel in other Romance languages and is one of Romanian's distinctive semantic developments.
