Etymology
Tratat entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of the deliberate re-Latinization of the language, likely by way of French traité or Italian trattato. It shares its root with the Romanian verb a trata, to treat or handle, which comes from the same Latin family. The underlying Latin verb tractare meant to handle, manage, or negotiate repeatedly, and its past participle sense of something worked out or settled gave rise to the noun meaning a formal agreement or a systematic written work.
