Etymology
Stinge comes from the Latin verb stinguere, meaning to quench or put out. Latin also built extinguere and distinguere on the same root, which is why English extinguish and distinguish still carry that syllable inside them. Romanian kept the bare root, without the ex- or dis- prefixes that Latin's descendants in the West preserved.
