Etymology

Bucuros is built from the root bucur-, the same root found in the verb a se bucura (to rejoice) and the noun bucurie (joy), plus the adjective-forming suffix -os, from Latin -osus, meaning full of. The deeper origin of the root bucur- is not settled. Romanian etymological dictionaries note a possible link to Albanian bukur (beautiful), which would point to a word inherited from the pre-Roman Balkan substrate rather than from Latin. No secure PIE root can be given.
