Romanian borrowed "chirurg" from French "chirurgien" or German "Chirurg" in the 19th century, as part of a wave of modern medical vocabulary. Those in turn descend from Greek "kheirourgos," a compound of "kheir" (hand) and "ergon" (work), meaning literally someone who works with the hands. The word entered most European languages through Latin "chirurgus."
