Etymology
Centură entered Romanian in the modern era as a learned borrowing, most likely from French ceinture or Italian cintura. Both of those trace back to Latin cinctura, a noun built on cingere, meaning to gird or encircle. Romanian later widened the word beyond clothing to cover ring roads and safety belts, following the same logic of something that encircles.
