Etymology
Romanian borrowed cauciuc from French caoutchouc in the 19th century, as rubber goods and terminology spread through Europe. French caoutchouc in turn came from Spanish caucho, which traces back to a Quechua word from South America, where indigenous peoples first showed Europeans latex tapped from rubber trees. The word has no native Latin root in Romanian; it entered as a modern technical borrowing along with the material itself.
