Romanian borrowed "profil" from French "profil" in the 19th century, part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped modern Romanian vocabulary. French "profil" itself came from Italian "profilo", tied to the verb "profilare", to draw an outline. The word originally described the side view of a face or object, and later widened to cover abstract summaries: a job profile, a company profile, a social media profile.
