Etymology
Salată entered Romanian from Italian salata or French salade during the 18th and 19th century wave of Romance borrowings, not through direct inheritance from Latin. Both source words trace to Vulgar Latin salata, literally "salted," the feminine past participle of a verb meaning to salt. The underlying idea is a dish of raw vegetables seasoned with salt. Romanian already had its own native word for salt, sare, inherited straight from Latin sal, so salată sits alongside it as a later, separate borrowing.
