Etymology
Romanian "tun" is generally traced to the verb "a tuna", meaning to thunder or to boom, which in turn descends from Latin "tonare" (to thunder). The link makes sense: a cannon's blast sounds like a peal of thunder, so the weapon took its name from the noise it makes. The same Latin root gave Italian "tuono" and French "tonnerre", both meaning thunder.
