Etymology
Nepoată descends from Vulgar Latin neptia, a variant of classical Latin neptis, meaning granddaughter or niece. It is the feminine counterpart of nepot, which comes from Latin nepos, nepotem. Both words trace back to Proto-Indo-European *nepot-, a term for a grandchild or descendant.
