Etymology

The verb comes from Latin "calcare", meaning to tread or trample, itself built on "calx, calcis" (heel). Romanian kept both the literal sense of stepping on something and, later, extended it to pressing with a hot iron, since ironing is also a repeated pressing-down motion. The same Latin root gave Romanian the word for heel, "călcâi".
