Etymology

Amabil entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as a learned borrowing from French aimable and Latin amabilis, part of a broader effort to re-Latinize the vocabulary after centuries of Slavic and Greek influence. Latin amabilis was built from amare, to love, plus the suffix -bilis, meaning capable of or worthy of. The original sense was lovable, worthy of being loved, but in Romanian the word softened to describe someone polite and obliging.
