Etymology
Romanian borrowed coincidență from French coïncidence in the nineteenth century, during the modernization of Romanian vocabulary. The French word traces to Medieval Latin coincidentia, built from the verb coincidere: co- ("together") plus incidere ("to fall upon, to happen"), itself in- ("onto") plus cadere ("to fall"). The core image is of two events falling onto the same point at once.
