Etymology
Batem is the first-person plural present form of the verb a bate, we beat. It comes from Latin battuere, to beat or strike, which Romanian inherited along with the rest of the Romance family. The ending -em marks the noi (we) form in the regular -e conjugation. Classical scholars note that battuere itself may have entered Latin as an early loan from Gaulish, so its deeper origin is debated rather than a clean native Latin root.
