Etymology

Problemă entered Romanian from French problème, itself from Latin problema, borrowed from Greek próblēma. The Greek word literally meant something put forward or thrown ahead, from proballein, to throw forward, combining pro- (forward) with ballein (to throw). Over time it shifted from a physical sense to an abstract one: a question or difficulty set before someone to solve.
