Etymology

Întărire is built inside Romanian, not borrowed whole from Latin. It comes from the verb a întări, itself formed from the prefix în- plus the adjective tare, meaning strong or hard. Tare traces back to Latin talis, meaning such or so, which shifted in Romanian to an intensifier and then to an adjective for strength or hardness. Adding the noun-forming suffix -ire to the verb stem gives the action noun întărire, the act of making something strong.
