Etymology
Tare comes from Latin talis, which meant "such" or "of this kind." Over time in popular speech, the word shifted from marking degree in a comparison to marking intensity on its own, and it settled into the sense of "strong" or "very." Other Romance languages kept talis closer to its original meaning of "such," so Romanian's shift to "strong" is a distinct development.
