Etymology

Muncă entered Romanian from Old Church Slavonic mǫka, which meant torment or suffering. Over time the sense narrowed and softened from pain to labor, a shift plausibly rooted in how hard physical work once felt like a form of suffering. This gives Romanian a word for work with a harsher emotional core than its Romance neighbors, whose words for work (like Italian lavoro) come from Latin roots tied to toil or a cattle-yoke rather than pain.
