Etymology

Moarte descends from the Latin noun mors, in its accusative form mortem. Regular sound changes in Vulgar Latin turned the ending into the Romanian feminine -e, giving moarte. The word has stayed in everyday use since Latin times, unlike some Romanian vocabulary that was later replaced by Slavic or French borrowings.
