Etymology
Picior comes from the Latin petiolus, a diminutive of pes, pedis, meaning foot. This is unusual among Romance languages, which mostly kept direct forms of pes (Italian piede, French pied, Spanish pie). Romanian instead generalized the diminutive form, which originally meant something like little foot or stalk. Over time petiolus shifted in sound and sense in Romanian to cover the whole leg, not just the foot.
