Etymology

Omorî entered Romanian from Old Slavonic umoriti, meaning to kill or to tire someone to death. The Slavic root mor- means death, and it happens to echo the unrelated-in-borrowing but ultimately cognate Latin root behind Romanian's own moarte and mort. Both branches trace back to a shared Indo-European root for dying, which is why the word felt native enough to settle deep into everyday Romanian speech. The verb kept its Slavic infinitive shape while adopting a Romanian fourth-conjugation ending.
