Etymology

Vreme comes from Common Slavic, borrowed into Romanian rather than inherited from Latin. The Slavic source, reflected in Old Church Slavonic vrěmę, meant simply time. Many scholars trace it further back to a root meaning to turn, the same idea behind Latin vertere, so time was conceived as something that revolves, like a wheel or a season. In Romanian the word split into two closely linked senses: time and, especially in everyday speech, weather.
