Etymology
Ucigaș is built on the stem of the verb a ucide, "to kill," plus the agentive suffix -aș, which turns a verb into "one who does it." A ucide itself descends from Latin occidere, "to kill, cut down," formed from ob- plus caedere, "to cut, strike." That same Latin root caedere runs through many English words borrowed later through French and Latin legal or scholarly vocabulary.
