Câteodată is a Romanian compound built inside the language itself, not inherited whole from Latin. It fuses câte, a distributive quantifier meaning roughly "some, a certain number of," with o dată, "one time." Dată is the feminine past participle of the verb a da, "to give," descended from Latin dare; a "given point" came to mean a time or instance, the same shift seen in the English word "date." Put together, câte + o + dată reads literally as "a certain number of times," which softened into the adverb "sometimes."
