Etymology

Romanian borrowed "inamic" in the nineteenth century, during the wave of French and Italian influence that reshaped much of the language's formal vocabulary. The source is Latin "inimicus," built from the negative prefix "in-" and "amicus," meaning friend. The word entered alongside the older, Slavic-derived "dușman," and the two now split by register: "inamic" sounds formal or military, "dușman" sounds everyday.
