Etymology
Seamă entered Romanian from a Slavic source during the medieval period, when Slavic-speaking neighbors supplied much everyday vocabulary tied to counting and administration. Its core sense was a count or tally, and this broadened over time to cover attention, importance, and even a rough match or equal. That last sense survives in the verb a semăna (to resemble) and the adjective asemenea (alike), both built by prefixing seamă with a-. No securely attested Slavic cognate form is given here to avoid guessing at a root.
