Etymology

Cer comes from the Latin caelum, meaning sky or heaven. The word passed into Romanian with the regular sound changes that turned Latin ae into Romanian e and Latin c before front vowels into a soft sound written ce. It kept both its concrete sense, the visible sky, and its religious sense, heaven.
