The word combines the prefix în-, from Latin in- used here in an intensive, directional sense, with trece, meaning "to pass" or "to cross." Trece itself descends from Vulgar Latin *tractiare, which in Romanian shifted from an original sense of drawing or tracing toward the meaning of passing or crossing. Adding în- to trece produced a verb meaning literally "to pass beyond," which came to mean "to surpass" or "to beat" in a race or contest.
