Etymology

Trece comes from Latin traicere, a compound of trans- (across) and iacere (to throw). In spoken Latin the word wore down in sound toward something like tracere, and normal Romanian sound changes turned that into trece. The old sense, to throw or send across, narrowed over centuries into the general modern one of passing or crossing.
