Etymology

Prim comes from Latin primus, meaning first. Primus itself is a superlative form built on the same ancient root that gave Latin the preposition per and English the word for. Romanian inherited the word directly from spoken Latin, alongside the more colloquial ordinal întâi. Today prim survives mainly in formal registers and in fixed compounds.
