Etymology
Primar comes from Latin primarius, meaning of the first rank or chief. Romanian took over the adjective directly during its 19th-century wave of Latin- and French-based borrowing, keeping the sense of primary or foremost. The noun sense, mayor, is a local semantic development: the head of a town council came to be called simply the first one, primar, much as French premier came to mean prime minister.
