Etymology

"Is" (often spelled "îs") is a popular, regional contraction of "sunt," the standard present-tense form of the verb "a fi" (to be) used for both the first person singular ("eu sunt," I am) and the third person plural ("ei sunt," they are). It survives mainly in rural and Moldavian speech and in older or dialect literature, and is treated as substandard in formal writing. Romanian "sunt" descends from Latin "sunt," the third-person plural of "esse," which in turn goes back to the ancient Indo-European verb for "to be."
