Etymology

Dormit is the past participle of the verb a dormi, to sleep, which comes directly from Latin dormire. Latin dormire itself descends from an old Indo-European root meaning to sleep, the same root that gave Greek and Sanskrit their own sleep-related words. Romanian kept the Latin verb almost unchanged, unlike most other Romance languages, which show similar forms such as Italian dormire and Spanish dormir.
