Etymology
Romanian took 'est' from French in the nineteenth century, part of a broader wave of French borrowings that reshaped Romanian's vocabulary for science and geography. French 'est' itself came from Old English 'ēast', adopted by French sailors in the Middle Ages for maritime navigation, alongside 'nord', 'sud', and 'ouest'. The root behind it all is the Proto-Indo-European *h₂ews-, meaning 'to shine' or 'dawn', since east marks where the sun comes up. The same root gives English 'east', German 'Ost', and the name 'Aurora'.
