Etymology
Romanian borrowed monstru from French monstre (or directly from Latin monstrum) during the 18th and 19th century push to re-Latinize the language's vocabulary. Latin monstrum meant a divine warning or portent, an unnatural sign sent by the gods, and only later narrowed to mean a deformed or frightening creature. The Latin word itself comes from monere, to warn, plus the instrumental suffix -trum, so a monstrum was literally a thing that warns.
