Etymology
Viață descends from Vulgar Latin vivitia, a noun built on vivus, meaning alive. It belongs to the same Latin family as vivere, to live, which also gave Romanian viu, alive. The word has stayed close to its Latin form for two thousand years, unlike many Romanian words that were later reshaped by Slavic influence.
